As advocates, lawyers can represent one of the parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client; although they all can represent their clients in court this is a very rare situation. When acting as a legal advisor, their responsibility is to provide legal guidance; this is usually when client requires guidance and possible courses of action.

Attorneys specializing in courtroom procedure are called trial lawyers; this does not appeal to everyone because it requires fast thinking plus a confident manner, and those who prefer to carry out his work are paid very well.Trial lawyers spend the majority of their time outside the courtroom; they perform their own investigations into the case in addition to other trial procedures including talking to witnesses.

Some lawyers who specialize in insurance law are employed in permanent positions within insurance companies; insurance terms and conditions often change to protect the company from fraudulent claims but they can also be useful performing insurance investigations.

Most attorneys work in the private sector working on criminal or civil law; persons charged with crimes are represented by criminal lawyers on both sides one for the defense and one for the prosecution; civil law assists clients experiencing litigation problems with wills, trusts, contracts, mortgages, titles, and leases for example.

There are those individuals that prefer very high profile, 'public interest cases' both civil and criminal; these usually involve disputes or claims against governments or large corporations. Lawyers with a more rounded social conscience can work for non-profit organizations or legal-aid centers; this aspect of legal assistance is often frowned upon but it is a dignified use of a person's legal skills.
