by Stewart M. Russell One of the most exciting developments to take advantage of the technology of the internet has to be the introduction of web cameras, or web cams as they're more commonly called. These small, and relatively cheap devices can deliver live, or virtually live images or video of any location in the world to the entire rest of the globe. Web cams have managed to shrink our world so that within a few mouse clicks you can not only read about other countries, you can jump quickly to a selection of web cams in that country and have a look yourself.

Overseas property investors have always been faced with a dilemma, even before they have chosen the country they would like to invest in. Some people will go simply for the more traditional locations, such as Spain, or places they have been to themselves personally before. This has the advantage that they know the country, and know what it is like - but what if you are considering investing in those countries that are only just beginning to be considered suitable investment locations? You can't visit them all very easily, and if you rely on glossy leaflets and websites you're left wondering whether the photo has been spruced up a little, or taken on one of the hottest and most amazing summer days they've ever had.

Overseas investors may seem to flit their attention from one country to another, from one continent to another, and the world suddenly seems a very small place indeed. Even those people who plan to go on holiday no longer seem as content with traditional resorts but instead turn their attention to little known locations that are less populated. We live in a world that is shrinking as a result of global technology, global business, cheap travel and online booking arrangements. We hardly have to leave the house to organise a trip to the other side of the world, yet there are still the miles to consider, and visiting several countries is still going to take time.

Web cams of course offer a wonderful solution here, since they are able to allow you to see a country or location for yourself, without ever having to leave your arm chair. For those looking into the idea of investing overseas, or even those looking at taking a holiday somewhere new, being able to see live footage from that place means that they can judge for themselves whether the photos in the leaflets are anything close to being representative.

There's nothing quite like being able to peer through the winter gloom and cold greyness, or stare out through the window in your office at the wider world, and then log on to a web cam somewhere and admire the summer sun and golden beaches of your favourite destination. It may even be that you own property abroad, and it could be that you're able to admire the view from your very own balcony! For holidaymakers, you could admire the view you'll be seeing for real very soon, or the view you had from your hotel room last time you went away.

There is a huge selling point as far as web cams is concerned of course, particularly for those who have invested in property abroad, and particularly so if the property has been purchased in a location that is less well known. Trying to advertise your property is hard work if you have decided to let it out, and persuading people that your photos aren't doctored in any way can be a challenge. If you have either your own web cam, or access to one nearby, you can direct potential customers to this so that they can see exactly what the location, and the weather, is like - anytime they want.

Yet another advantage, if you have a property abroad, is of course the aspect of security. Having a web cam that actually overlooks your property allows you to keep an eye on it at any time, and most cameras come with the option to take video only when movement is detected. Having internal web cams allows you to shows potential customers what the property is like, and allows you to keep an eye on the place when you're away. Obviously you would have an issue with privacy, since residents would not like the idea of you spying on them - so these would have to be removed during occupation.

I really do find it amazing that I can sit here, and admire the sun sparkling off the waves as they roll gracefully in to the golden bay of Javea, whilst outside my window it looks bleak, and grey, and damp. With web cams able to offer live video from anywhere in the world, and virtual tours of properties thousands of miles away, I can only sit in wonder, and imagine just what we can look forward to in the future, to help make our world yet smaller?
