The use of color was the greatest revolution to happen in the world of media. No doubt black and white has produced some of the most stunning, stylish and unforgettable work till date, but the use of color just seems to brighten up every thing. Hence, very naturally, its use is a very important part of web design too.
Computer monitors use the RGB color model. RGB stands for red, green, blue. Compared to the RGB model printing on paper makes use of the CMYK color model. CYMK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. All other colors in both the media are produced by the use of these colors, overlapping them in various percentages.
The RGB model that is used for web design is able to represent a much wider percentage of the visible spectrum, compared to the CYMK color model. That means the web designer enjoys a major advantage over the print designer. The RGB color mode allows you the freedom to use more brilliant and vibrant colors, than can be used for print. However, the designer should be aware of the flip side of this. If he suffers from a poor color sense, he could end up creating the most horrid color combinations that anyone has seen.
Color does a variety of things. Not only do specific colors have special connotations in different cultures, they also help to create moods, add emphasis, attract attention to particular objects and also do a host of other things. By the use of color, you can direct the sensibility of the reader, helping him to understand your content better. However the wrong use of colors can cause a lot of harm. Using a wrong colored background for your text will not augment the presentation in any way; rather it serves to detract from the text material, thus making for poor readability.
The happiest part of web designing is that colors don’t cost money. You can have colored pictures, colored backgrounds and also colored types. The web designer can be as splashy as he wants to, all the while keeping two things in mind – good aesthetics and the plight of the common man viewing his design, who by the way still uses a 800 x 600 screen, with a 216-color palette and downloads at 56kbps.
